The Yamato was a Japanese battleship during World War II. It was then the largest and most heavily armed battleship ever built.
Its construction took place between 1937 and 1941 at the Kure shipyard (Hiroshima) in the greatest secrecy. It was commissioned on December 16, 1941. Its artillery was of a caliber of 46 centimeters, the largest used until then for breech-loading guns on ships.
The Yamato, considered “unsinkable” ended up sinking on April 7, 1945, after being attacked for more than 2 hours by a total of 386 planes, which seriously damaged it with 13 torpedoes, 8 bombs and many close shots.
